As relevant today as it ever was, Sidney Lumet's brilliant, multiple Oscar-winning satirical exposé of the men and women behind the television networks stars Faye Dunaway, Peter Finch, William Holden, Robert Duvall, and Ned Beatty. When Howard Beale (Finch), the dean of newscasters at the United Broadcasting System, is forced to retire, network executive Max Schumacher (Holden), Howard's best friend, must deliver the bad news. Beale can't stomach the idea of losing his 25-year post as anchorman simply because of age, so in his next broadcast he announces to the viewers that he's going to commit suicide on his final program. Network head Frank Hackett (Duvall) advocates kicking.

NEWSIES is inspired by the true story of the 1899 newsboy strike in New York City. It’s a timeless story addressing the strength of a group against oppression. NEWSIES showcases a group of young, poor children, many of whom were runaways and orphans, just trying to sell papers to make enough money to survive. However, headlines were bad and papers weren’t selling. So the owners, Pulitzer, and Hearst, decide to raise newspaper prices to the newsies, making them sell twice as many for the same profit. This is an energetic, idealistic, musical, that will have you smiling one second and crying a minute later. NEWSIES captivates the strength that young people have when they join together and stand up against injustice.

"Easter in Art" @ State Theatre
The story of Christ's death and resurrection has dominated western culture for the past 2000 years. It is perhaps the most significant historical event of all time, as recounted by the gospels but, equally, as depicted by the greatest artists in history. From the triumphant to the savage, the ethereal to the tactile, some of western civilization's greatest artworks focus on this pivotal moment. This beautifully crafted film explores the Easter story as depicted in art, from the time of the early Christians to the present day. Shot on location in Jerusalem, United States and throughout Europe, the film explores the different ways artists have depicted the Easter story through the ages and thus depicts the history of us all.

WED 3/18 "Dawn of Impressionism" @ State Theatre
The Impressionists are the most popular group in art history – millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But, to begin with, they were scorned, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists, “hungry for independence”, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever. What led to that first groundbreaking show 150 years ago? Who were the maverick personalities that wielded their brushes in such a radical and provocative way? The spectacular Musée d’Orsay exhibition brings fresh eyes to this extraordinary tale of passion and rebellion. The story is told not by historians and curators but in the words of those who witnessed the dawn of Impressionism: the artists, press and people of Paris, 1874.
Made in close collaboration with the Musee d’Orsay and National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
